Dr Doug's Anti-Inflammatory Diet For Dogs

As veterinarians, we are constantly looking for ways to enhance the health and well-being of our furry patients. One of the most impactful ways to support dogs' overall health is through their diet. Just like humans, dogs can suffer from inflammation, which can lead to a variety of health issues. Fortunately, there's an effective and natural solution: an anti-inflammatory diet.

What is an Anti-Inflammatory Diet?

My anti-inflammatory diet focuses on reducing inflammation in the body by feeding them whole, nutrient-rich foods that are known for their anti-inflammatory properties. By incorporating these foods into your dog's diet, you can help alleviate inflammation and support their overall health and vitality.

Key Components of an Anti-Inflammatory Diet

  1. Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish oil, flaxseed oil, linseed meal and fatty fish like salmon, are known for their powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Adding these to your dog's food can help reduce inflammation and support joint health.

  2. Fresh Fruits and Vegetables: Incorporating a small amount of fresh fruits and vegetables into your dog's diet provides vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that can help combat inflammation. Look for colourful options like blueberries, spinach, and sweet potatoes. Given that dogs are carnivores, only provide 1 part fruit/veg to 7 parts meat occasionally into their food.

  3. Protein Sources: High-quality, protein sources such as chicken, turkey, and beef provide essential amino acids that support muscle health and reduce inflammation. Do not feed your dog bacon, ham or sausages as they contain preservatives such as sulphites and nitrosamines. Some fat on or in meat is fine because it carries many vitamins (A,D,E & K) and useful polyphenols. Too much fat, however, can lead to pancreatitis.

  4. Do not feed your dog food from your plate just because you can. Consider what you’re feeding them. Is it spicy? Does it contain preservatives or sulphites? Remember that the majority of spices and seasonings can cause diarrhoea, vomiting and even cause further inflammatory issues for your pet. Bacon, ham, sausages, wurst, raisins, baked goods are also harmful as they contain preservatives and sulphates. More on what not to feed your dog here.

  5. Golden Paste: One potent addition to your dog's anti-inflammatory diet is golden paste. Golden paste is a mixture of turmeric, black pepper, and coconut oil, known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Turmeric contains curcumin, a compound that has been shown to reduce inflammation and relieve pain in both humans and dogs. When prepared correctly with high-potency turmeric powder, the bioavailability of curcumin is increased, making it more effective for inflammation relief.

Once you have prepared golden paste, you can easily incorporate it into your dog's diet. Simply mix a small amount of golden paste into your dog's food each day, starting with a small dose and gradually increasing as needed. If you’re unsure how much your dog needs everyday to reduce inflammation, use our chat feature to find out from a professional.

In addition to adding golden paste to your dog's food, you can also use it topically to help relieve inflammation and pain in specific areas. Simply apply a small amount of golden paste directly to the affected area and gently massage it in.

Is It Bad To Feed My Dog Dry Biscuits or Wet Food?

Feeding your dog good dry biscuits (aka kibble) or wet food isn't inherently bad, but there are important considerations to keep in mind to ensure your dog's health and well-being. Dry biscuits are great for dog’s teeth, but they need to be made from good quality ingredients with no fillers included. Wet food, unless frozen, will contain harmful preservatives. Always check the ingredients labels on food products.

Give Your Dog The Best Possible Future

An anti-inflammatory diet, including key ingredients like omega-3 fatty acids, moderate quantities of fresh fruits and vegetables, protein sources, and golden paste, can provide powerful support for your dog's overall health and well-being. By making simple changes to your dog's diet, you can help reduce inflammation, alleviate pain, and promote a long and healthy life. As always, be sure to consult with your veterinarian before making any changes to your dog's diet or treatment plan.
